Dr. Kang Zhang is Professor and Head of the Computational Media and Arts Thrust (CMA) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) (HKUST-GZ), and Professor of the Division of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas (EMIA) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He was a Fulbright Distinguished Chair and among Stanford University World’s Top 2% Scientists (Lifetime Scientific Impact Ranking (1960-2022)).
Zhang obtained his B.Eng. in Computer Engineering from the University of Electronic Science and Technology (China, 1982), Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from University of Brighton (UK, 1990), and Executive MBA from the University of Texas at Dallas (USA, 2011). He held academic positions at Beijing Normal University – Hong Kong Baptist University United International College(China, 2021), the University of Texas at Dallas (USA, 2000-2021, now as Professor Emeritus), Macquarie University (Australia, 1991-2000), and Science and Engineering Research Council (UK, 1991). His research interests are interdisciplinary, including visual languages, computational aesthetics, generative art and design, and aesthetic measurement.
Zhang is an Editorial Board member of Journal of Visual Language and Computing, International Journal of Software Engineering and Knowledge Engineering, The Visual Computer, Journal of Big Data, Visual Computing for Industry, Biomedicine and Art, and AI & Society. He has been invited to deliver keynotes at many arts, design, management, and computer science conferences; and published 8 books and over 120 journal papers in different subject areas, including architecture, art, design, engineering, information, and psychology.
