Margaret Minsky creates multimedia artifacts exploring learning, improvisation, and thought. She is a Visiting Researcher (Professor) in Computation and Media at Kyoto University. Minsky received a PhD in Media Arts and Sciences, and a BS in Mathematics, both from MIT. Her core research at the MIT Media Lab on haptic interfaces led to the first computational technique for creating haptic textures. Minsky’s recent investigations are in Craft Computing (creating experiential environments supporting e-Textiles, embroidery, and pleating with computing), and in Whole-Body interaction (exploring movement practices, physical performance, and cognitive, social, and physical well-being).
She has been Visiting Professor of Interactive Media and Business at NYU Shanghai; Visiting Scholar at U. of North Carolina CS Department, and is on the Advisory Board of the ATLAS Institute at U. Colorado at Boulder. Minsky previously directed research at Atari Cambridge Laboratory and Interval Research Corporation. Her publications and patents span computer graphics, Human-Computer Interaction, education, wearables, and mechanical engineering. Art residencies include the ATLAS Institute at Boulder and the Centre for Digital Media in Vancouver. She has served on numerous conference program committees including ACM Siggraph. She is also a recreational performer in Trapeze and Circus Arts.
