Time: Nov 8, 2021 09:30AM HKTAbstract:The sublime means a quality of greatness that inspires awe and wonder, an ideal that artists have long pursued. In the contemporary sense, the sublime has a shifted focus towards the experience of the viewer or beholder of the sublime. Employing a variety of visual and auditory methods, Xu has attempted to create an experience that engages the viewer's senses and brings him or her into the work. Through discussing some of her visual music projects, Xu takes a look at her journey of achieving the feeling of sublime and how she employs such feeling to comment on our relationships to nature, society and ourselves.
Speaker Bio:Rebecca Ruige Xu currently teaches computer art and animation as a Professor in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University. Her artwork and research interests include experimental animation, visual music, artistic data visualization, interactive installations, digital performance, and virtual reality. Her recent work has appeared at: SIGGRAPH & SIGGRAPH Asia Art Gallery; ISEA; Ars Electronica; IEEE VIS Arts Program; Museum of Contemporary Art, Italy; Los Angeles Center for Digital Art, USA; FILE– Electronic Language International Festival, Brazil; Techfest -Technical Arts Exhibition, India; Colloquium culture and digitization, Switzerland; CYNETart, Germany; International Digital Art Exhibition, China. Xu served on the Media Arts Advisory Panel for the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts. She was the co-founder of the ChinaVIS Conference Arts Program and the Co-Chair of the 2019, 2020 IEEE PacificVIS Visual Storytelling Contest. Currently Xu is the Exhibition Chair of the 2021 IEEE VIS Arts Program, and serves on the Executive Committee for the Association of Chinese Artists in American Academia.
