At the AIC (International Colour Association) 2024 conference in São Paulo, Brazil, held on September 19. The Colour Research Group from the Computational Media and Arts (CMA) Thrust of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) captured international attention for the first time. Guided by Assistant Professor Luwen YU, Ph.D. student Lina XU was honored with the prestigious “Best Paper” award for her outstanding contributions to color research.

The AIC was founded on June 21, 1967, in Washington, D.C., USA, during the 16th Session of the CIE (Commission Internationale de l’Éclairage), the AIC is recognized as one of the world’s most distinguished organizations and conferences in color science. Since the first color conference in Sweden in 1969, AIC has hosted over fifty international gatherings, drawing scholars from diverse disciplines worldwide to explore color research and its applications across fields. Today, AIC remains an invaluable platform for interdisciplinary dialogue, celebrating advancements in color theory, technology, and application.

Lina XU’s award-winning paper, titled "The Effect of Reading Background Colour on Human Cognitive Performance Based on Multi-Modal Data Analysis - A Study of Gender Differences," uses multi-modal data—user behavior, fNIRS brain imaging, and eye tracking—to reveal how different background colors impact cognitive performance across genders and to uncover the underlying mechanisms. Her work enriches theoretical understanding and provides practical insights for optimizing color design in educational and workplace settings. Lina’s research was met with high praise from experts, further elevating the CMA Thrust’s reputation on the global stage.

This recognition underscores HKUST (Guangzhou)'s commitment to pioneering interdisciplinary color science and art research, cultivating innovative academic talent, and driving impactful research forward.

The Colour Research Group, established in September 2023 and led by Professor Luwen YU at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), features a specialized psychophysical lab for colour research. The lab is equipped with standard colour illumination systems, professional colour monitors, DigiEye imaging system, a spectrophotometer, and neuroimaging tools like fNIRS, EEG, and eye-tracking devices, all supported by dedicated analysis software. The Group warmly invites collaboration and guidance from experts and partners across various fields.
