Vangelis Lympouridis: Presence and Impact in VR
Virtual Reality is a new old technology but, most notably, a brand new medium. Since the late '60s and towards the 21st century, there is strong evidence on how impactful this new medium will be. The sense of presence plays a significant role in the quality of the VR experience and often determines its impact. This presentation will outline theoretical and practical examples of our work that proved impact in various contexts in the past few years.
Vangelis Lympouridis, Ph.D., is part-time faculty at the Viterbi School of Engineering at USC, teaching AR/VR and Mixed Reality, a senior researcher at the Creative Media and Behavioral Health Center, and a visiting scholar at the School of Cinematic Arts. Vangelis is an expert in virtual reality and interactive media and offers his services in industry and academia. He is the founder of Enosis, a specialized company providing innovation by design and strategic advisory services in emerging and immersive tech across industry verticals. As the Chief Design Officer at Applied VR, he designed and oversaw a series of Medical VR products, including the first clinically validated chronic pain management platform in VR.

He has been associated with workshops and joined research projects, including the Biomechanics Lab at USC, the Center for New Music and Audio Technologies CNMAT at UC Berkeley, the Synthesis Center at ASU, the Topological Media Lab at Concordia University, and the London School of Economics. He received his Ph.D. in Whole Body Interaction Design from the University of Edinburgh.
