Mingming Fan

Mingming Fan is an Associate Professor in Computational Media and Arts Thrust and Internet of Things Thrust at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) (HKUST(GZ)). He is also an associate professor (joint appointment) in Division of Integrative Systems and Design in HKUST. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Toronto. He directs Augmenting People via Empowering X (APEX) Group to conduct interdisciplinary research in the area of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), in particular focusing on innovating human-AI interaction methods and VR/AR/MR-based interactive systems for addressing AI-era learning/education challenges and aging and accessibility challenges.

Dr. Fan is ranked second in the world in the field of Human-Computer Interaction in recent years (2022-2025) according to a well-known computer science ranking (CSRanking). His group has published over 80 CCF-A rank scientific papers in top venues of HCI and has won 11 paper awards, including 5 Best Paper and Honorable Mention Awards from CHI (the premier venue of the field of HCI), Outstanding Paper Award and Best Paper Honorable Mention Award from ACM Multimedia (CCF A), Best Paper Honorable Mention Award from ACM UbiComp (CCFA), Best Artifact Award at ASSETS, and Best Paper Honorable Mention Awards at Chinese CHI (x 2). His contributions are recognized with a “Young Pioneer Award” from International Chinese Association of Computer Human Interaction and an inaugural CCF HCI Young Scientist Incentive Scheme award. He regularly serves in various roles for top HCI venues, including CHI, TOCHI, IMWUT/UbiComp, CSCW, UIST, ASSETS, and DIS. He currently serves as a Program Chair for ACM ASSETS 2026.

Dr. Fan is keen on educating next-generation talents. He has been teaching both PG and UG courses and supervising students at all levels. By the summer of 2025, Dr. Fan has graduated 22 MPhil students and 3 PhD students as the prime academic supervisor. As the co-supervisor, Dr Fan has also graduated 14 MPhil students and 2 PhD students.
