Anca-Simona Horvath

Anca serves as tenure-track assistant professor in Computational Media and Arts and leads the @A: Art, Technology Architecture group.

Her work investigates the relationships between emerging technologies and creative practices, together with their place in broader cultural contexts. Her focus is on computational design and fabrication, AI and bio-technologies applied to architecture and design.

Anca's outputs sit at the intersection of architecture, media art and human-computer interaction and her research has been published in venues such as: Frontiers of Architectural Research, International Journal of Architectural Computing, CAADRIA, Artnodes, Politics of the Machines, CHI and C&C. Anca's research received the best paper award at CAADRIA in 2024 and her design / artworks have been exhibited internationally in Italy, Denmark, Romania and Spain.

Before joining HKUST-GZ, Anca served as a post-doctoral researcher and later assistant professor at Aalborg University in Denmark as part of the Research Laboratory for Art and Technology where she maintains an affiliation as guest researcher. Anca has a PhD, Msc and Bsc in architecture from the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and a Msc in architecture from the Institute for Advanced Architecture (IAAC) at the Polytechnica de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain. Her work experience spans academia and practice/industry asshe worked as an architect and computational designer in Romania and Denmark for a total of 5 years.

Anca was principal investigator for Un-disciplinary (funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation); Reconsidering Otherness; Speculative Hybrinds! (both funded by the Human-Centered AI cluster at Aalborg University); Creative Entanglements for Sustainability: Artificial biology, robotics and art (funded by the Environmental Humanities Cluster at Aalborg University) and took part in a number of trans-disciplinary research projects including ABRA: Artificial Biology, Robotics and Art, and 3D Prime: 3D Printing for Medical Education and Training, both funded by the European Commission. Over the last years, she has been acting as an expert evaluator for the European Commission. At Aalborg University, Anca was involved in teaching in a range of programs, primarily BA Art&Technology and MA Media Arts Cultures (Erasmus Mundus Excellence program) and received the Teacher of the Year for Art&Technology award in 2020.

@A: Art, Technology, Architecture is currently accepting Mphil and PhD students.
