Max Hattler: Experimental Animation between Art and Technology

In this presentation, Max Hattler gives an insight into his artistic practice and research in experimental animation, video installation and audiovisual performance. Through a discussion of early works like the War on Terror-abstraction Collision (2005), recent Hong Kong-made films Divisional Articulations (2017) and Serial Parallels (2019), and the brand-new immersive stereoscopic installation Vœrtex (2020), Hattler delineates the ways in which his moving image works navigate and probe the complex relationships between art and technology, sound and image, movement and meaning, and abstraction and figuration.

Tianran Duan: Genealogical study of Experimental Animation

Experimental animation as an unique film genre has its profound roots to Avant-garde film history and modernism art movement. Different from aesthetic critique, experimental animation study also raises discussion of elitist ideology via perceptional experiments. Genealogical study of experimental animation will talk about the methodology of cinema apparatus including media archaeology, visual culture study and cinema-alien.

Speaker Biography:

Dr. Max Hattler is a German video artist, experimental filmmaker, audiovisual performer, animation researcher, curator and educator. He is an Assistant Professor at the School of Creative Media at City University of Hong Kong. After studying in London at Goldsmiths and the Royal College of Art, he completed a Doctorate in Fine Art at the University of East London. Hattler’s artworks have been presented around the world, including at Ars Electronica, European Media Art Festival, Seoul Museum of Art, MoCA Taipei and Sónar Hong Kong. His recent architectural animation Serial Parallels has received prizes from Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Montreal Festival du Nouveau Cinema, Cinanima Festival, Prix Ars Electronica, Animatou Festival and many others. As the chairman of Relentless Melt, Hattler regularly curates programmes of Hong Kong abstract and experimental animation for local and international audiences, most recently at London International Animation Festival, Supernova Digital Animation Festival, Iso Film Fest, and Filmasia Asian Film Festival Prague. Max Hattler has presented papers at the Society for Animation Studies Conference, CONFIA in Portugal, and the inaugural Annual China Animation Studies Conference in Chengdu. He serves on the board of directors of the iotaCenter and the editorial boards of Animation Practice Process & Production and Animation: An Interdisciplinary Journal.

Speaker Biography:

Tianran Duan is currently teaching in New Media Art and Animation program in the School of Fine Arts at Renmin University of China. As a researcher, he works at culture and arts research institute of Renmin University and Shenzhen RCAD Digital arts creative research institute. He received his MFA degree in John C Hench animation and digital arts program of University of Southern California in 2011. Throughout his career, his films and artworks have been screened internationally and entered the national finalist of 37th and 39th Student Academy. His art works have been exhibited in many important art museums and film festivals, such as Oberhausen Film Festival, Annecy Animation Festival, Hiroshima Animation Festival and 2016 Arco Madrid,International Contemporary Art Fair. His research papers have been published in many art journals, such as Films Studies in China, Art Observation and Movie Review.
